Computer Recycle in NOLA

Rent-A-Nerd, Inc. has always been happy to accept our customers’ old computers–the picture above is of our former computer graveyard. After removing their memory, we’d send them off to be recycled, give them to students for projects, and recently we donated some to members of the Krewe du Who (they removed some really spectacular parts to use on their Dr. Who-themed contraptions). However, now that we’ve moved to our fabulous new space on the corner of Tulane Avenue and Galvez, we are no longer able to sustain this computer graveyard. Therefore, we have provided this list of computer recycle places in NOLA. The Department of Sanitation 2829 Elysian Fields Avenue New Orleans, LA 70122 Offers monthly recycling drop-off at the Recycling Drop-Off Center at 2829Read Full Article

Guest Blogger Collecting Items for CASA

Rent-A-Nerd, Inc. is thrilled to have guest blogger and local student, Eleanor, write about her service project; we think you’re going to be very impressed with this young lady.   Hello everyone! My name is Eleanor and I am a freshman at Ursuline Academy, New Orleans. This year for my service hours I am working with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). CASA New Orleans fights for the rights of abused and neglected children. The majority of the children in foster care do not have anything to carry their belongings in when traveling from home to home, so they are forced to use a trash bag instead. To help contribute to CASA and these children, I will be collecting suitcases now through March. Please help whileRead Full Article

ABWA New Orleans: Crescent City Connections EN Chartered

October 9, 2014 was an exciting day. It was the day that the ABWA Crescent City Connections Express Network was officially chartered, marking the organization’s return to New Orleans following a nine year absence. You see, there had been six ABWA leagues in the Greater New Orleans area. However, after the storm that ripped apart our city, all six leagues disbanded. I’m please to say that ABWA is back in New Orleans, and growing quickly! I remember receiving an email via LinkedIn regarding the formation of a new ABWA league in New Orleans and was immediately interested. The nation-wide organization’s mission statement says it all: “The mission of the American Business Women’s Association is to bring together business women of diverse occupations and to provideRead Full Article

Nerds Care: Sheets and Towels for the Jefferson SPCA

As part of our ongoing commitment to the community, Rent-A-Nerd is collecting sheets and towels for the Jefferson SPCA.  The Jefferson SPCA partners with the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter (both the East Bank and West Bank shelters) to provide adoption and other humane services.  In addition to helping the shelter, the Jefferson SPCA provides no-cost spay and neuter to area feral cats, and very low-cost spay and neuter services for the pets of area residents. You can support this nonprofit organization through monetary donations, hands-on volunteer efforts, and the donation of supplies.  You can also help by promoting the many benefits of adopting homeless animals.  Please consider donating your gently used sheets and towels. These items are always needed, but especially so during the busyRead Full Article

Nerds Care: Jefferson SPCA

Nerds believe strongly in community outreach.  This past Sunday, we dropped off a trunk-load of toiletries and other items to Ozanam Inn, a shelter for the homeless, located in the New Orleans CBD.  This donation capped off our most recent community outreach efforts, which began this past winter, when the need was exacerbated by the extreme temperatures.  We thank all of our friends and clients who generously donated items for this cause. Our next community outreach project will be to collect items for the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, to be donated to the non-profit agency that handles its pet adoptions and other similar services, the Jefferson SPCA.  Rent-A-Nerd has also given in the past to the LA/SPCA, which provides similar services in Orleans Parish.  Recently,Read Full Article

Darrin guest lectures at Delgado Community College

Darrin was recently asked to give a presentation to students at  Delgado Community College.  So, on a recent morning, he gave a talk to the Introduction to Business class, along with Kelvin Gipson, Alumni Services Manager for Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses.  Here’s Darrin’s account of the experience: I gave a brief presentation on being a business owner and entrepreneur as well as fielded questions from students.  I met fellow graduates of the Goldman Sachs program, Heidi Raines of Medical Executive Partners, and Tracey Ryals-Frazier of B&S Equipment Company.  Not only did I learn a lot about their businesses and the common issues that we as business owners come across.  I also learned that many of the students had questions that were in line withRead Full Article

Computer for Donation

We have a desktop computer to donate to an area nonprofit organization! Please send us your suggested agencies. We are also seeking a (gently) used flat screen monitor to pair with this computer, so if you have one to donate, please consider doing so. The computer is a Dell Pentium Dualcore, 2.7 Ghz, 6 GB RAM, with Windows 7 Home Premium and Open Office. It’s ideal for word processing. We want to be sure this goes to a good home! Special thanks to our fabulous client, Avery Fine Perfumery, for donating the computer. It was a breeze for us to clean it out and get it ready for use.
